Are 4K TVs really worth thousands of dollars?

Since 2014, tech experts are closely watching television industry as several electronic giants are launching their 4K TVs. But are these TVs really worth their price tag? Let’s take a look at some points to know more about 4K Ultra HD television sets.

4K allows studios to deliver IMAX-like experience to viewers sitting in their home

Warner Brothers Home Entertainment’s President Ron Sanders interacted with journalists and shared his opinion about curved TVs. He stressed on the point that Ultra HD TVs would allow them to develop content that offers premium picture quality, superior contrast, true-to-life colors, as they can use broader palette to tell their stories. Offering such premium experience is possible with help from wide industry consortium.

Tech experts often point out that 3D TVs failed to gain popularity due to their high price and lack of availability of content for television sets. But perhaps, this won’t be the case as far as content for UHD curved smart TVs are concerned. As mentioned earlier, Hollywood studios like Disney, Warner brothers, Comcast, Netflix, Google, etc. have already started developing content for curved 4k tv. Electronics giant Panasonic is also ready to release world’s first 4K Blu-ray player.

The real challenge in front of curved 4k tv makers is convincing individuals to replace their existing TV sets with UHD TVs that are worth thousands of dollars. Due to credit crunch and unemployment, people have very less disposable income. Plus, smart phones and tab PCs are slowly set to replace television as the main source of entertainment.

Is 4K TV here to stay?

It is clear that broadcasters, Hollywood studios, and video streaming service providers are set to upgrade their content to 4K, just like how they upgraded to HD from SD before few years. These signs are definitely better compared to how markets reacted to 3D. Even top research firms suggest the same.

Gartner research firm’s analyst Paul O’Donovan recently shared his organization’s opinion about UHD TVs. He stressed on the point that 3D TVs failed as they were more like gimmick for customers. People love to watch 3D movies in theaters, but it appears as if no one is willing to watch TV with glasses at home.

Currently, 4K TV is available for as low as $1000, and industry experts believe that the prices will keep on reducing this year. Almost every popular electronics brand around the world is planning to launch their 4K TV. As per Gartner’s prediction, around 30 percent of the TVs sold during 2018 would be 4K sets.

Can users watch HD channels on UHD sets?

There are several HD TV users around the world. Almost all popular broadcasters in the US, the UK offer HD channels featuring popular shows. These HD channels can also be viewed on Ultra HD TVs that have built-in conversion chips to perform the task. Unfortunately, some TVs do not offer this feature. So, while buying your new 4K TV, make sure that your set offers capability to watch SD and HD content as well.

However, HD content won’t offer IMAX like picture quality, and may prove to be less impressive than watching 4K content.

Will 4K survive when 8K TVs arrive in the market?

BBC surprised everyone when it shot some parts of Summer Olympics 2012 in 8K. Even Japan’s NHK plans to relay some programs in 8K format. However, this does not mean that 4K would be out of the market. Remember, when it comes to HD, people use both, 720p and 1080p as well.

No doubt that 8K is present in the market and broadcasters are testing their hands on the same. Perhaps, sometime in the future, users might get option to choose between 4K UHD and 8K UHD TV sets. Broadcasters around the world would be able to offer 8K only after pioneering in offering 4K. So, it is clear that this journey would take a long time.
