WordPress Vs Joomla – What Should I Choose?

WordPress or Joomla?

I have come across this question number of times and so I thought let’s address this question today.

People have always been confused about what should they go for, chooseWordPress or go for Joomla. When I am asked to help them select the best Content Management System (CMS), I in turn ask their needs and priorities.

Below is a list of some of the most common questions of web designers and developers. Try and answer them to yourself, and you are good to go!

WordPress Vs Joomla

Are you a blogger or you want to create an e-commerce site?

If you intend to use your website as blog, then WordPress should be your clear choice. WordPress started as blog platform and it has been a huge success. Admin Panel of WordPress is very user-friendly and can be easily used by novices.Minor customizations related to post dates, navigation structure etc may require knowledge of WordPress scripting and CSS. Joomla too is a CMS with blog features, however WordPress is a clear winner.

Joomla on the other hand has been used more for e-commerce sites. It is also an apt choice if you want to create a social networking site or want to integrate such features with your existing site.It is easy to create navigation structure and doesn’t require in-depth knowledge of html. You can set articles to expire after a time, activate dates, author name, breadcrumbs etc.

With Joomla, menus are controlled through the control panel and article attributes like dates, author name etc can be turned on and off per article or for the whole site in just single step. In that respect, Joomla is much more a content management system.

Which CMS has more number of free themes and plugins available?

WordPress has more number of free themes and plugins as compared to Joomla. WordPress themes and plugins are generally designed for content creation or blogging, whereas Joomla templates and plugins are more versatile. If you need minimal design, go for WordPress but if you want freedom and versatility with template designs, then Joomla is the right choice. Both WordPress and Joomla are easily customizable.

Which CMS is better from SEO perspective?

WordPress is substantially better for SEO than Joomla. It has wide range of plugins that will do lot of your SEO work. As compared to Joomla, SEO becomes an easy task. You can build your landing pages much faster and easier. Joomla is great for landing pages, but it takes longer to learn how to create these pages. Joomla also has many plugins for SEO, so it is not that if you are planning to use Joomla for your site, you will face problems related to SEO.

Which CMS offers better online resources for support?

Both WordPress and Joomla offer large number of resources to guide you and resolve your doubts. However, the size of WordPress community is quite larger than Joomla. Hence the number of tutorials, how-to guides and other free resources for WordPressis far more than that of Joomla. It’s easy to find answers of your queries within the community as well as outsideWordPress support forum.

Joomla too has its support community but the number of Joomla users is smaller than WordPress. Hence, due to its smaller community, Joomla has fewer resources available for users.

Do you need multilingual website?

WordPress has no multi-lingual capability but it can be overcome with a plugin namedPolylang. Joomla has built-inmulti-lingual capability. But certain order of actions should be followed to make it work. There are many video tutorials available on YouTube to help you out.

Which CMS is more stable and easy to maintain?

Many a times Joomla upgrades break some of the extensions and migration from older versions can be cumbersome. However, simple updates between upgrades are easy to do and hardly break anything.WordPress is a much more stable system and upgrading to higher version seldom disturbs anything.

Built-in importer in WordPress makes it easy to import posts and pages from other WordPress sites. In Joomla, it can be a bit of problem to import articles from one site to another. There are extensions available to make this job easier, but novices may face difficulty.

Which one is suitable for your budget?

Both are open source technologies and hence free. However, in case you need customization, WordPress development may prove to be cheaper than Joomla. Because of its popularity, it’s easy to find a WordPress developer.

Conclusion

Joomla has a complicated structure and even experienced web developers may take some time to learn the system and the approach can be different depending on the layout template you chose.Joomla is great for community sites but for a regular site it could be an excess.

WordPress is the best choice for simple and small websites with a blog. It is easy to work with and hence it is preferred by majority of beginners.

My advice is to look at your specific needs and consider your technical abilities (or budget for technical support), you can make the right choice.

The choice between WordPress and Joomla mainly comes down to what you plan to do and how you want to achieve your goals.
